Durga Puja Theme: Jagaddhatri Puja signifies worshipping of another form of goddess Durga, the supreme goddess. It literally means 'Holder (dhatri) of the World (Jagat)'. Jagaddhatri is three-eyed and four-armed goddess riding on a lion standing on the dead Karindrasura, the Elephant Demon. Though Devi Jagaddhatri is worshipped all over West Bengal, however, the epicentre lies in Chandannagar, a former French colony, 30 km North off Kolkata, where it is celebrated for four days with much greater grandeur and fanfare. Lighting and huge idols are the hallmark of Chandannagar Jagaddhatri Puja. In Kolkata as well this puja holds a special significance as goddess Durga re-visits the city. The immersion procession is really memorable and enjoyable sight to witness. Many beautifully decorated tall images of Devi Jagaddhatri, loaded on trucks are taken around the city in a single procession. Lakhs of people come to Chandannagar to see the procession. As the density of Puja Mandaps was very high for a small town like Chandannagar, we could not explicitly name the Puja committees.
